Pollutants, such as chemicals, oil, dirt, debris and bacteria that flow untreated into storm drains often enter water bodies causing
problems within the water used for drinking, swimming and other activities. The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)
Stormwater Program regulates stormwater discharges and establishes guidelines to limit the amount of pollutants entering waterways.
Facilities subject to this program must take active steps – often referred to as Best Management Practices (BMPs) – to prevent
or minimize the amount of pollution leaving their facility.
