Question: How long can you leave out the PIG Oil-Only Railroad Absorbent Mat? Do you need to put down a tarp or barrier so no liquid leaks through to railroad tracks or the ground?
Answer: It depends on how much and how often the mat absorbs liquid, as well as its exposure to sunlight and UV rays.
You can use the PIG Oil-Only Railroad Absorbent Mat until it is fully saturated with oil or fuel, at which point it will become slippery. The mat could also become damaged by UV-rays and start to breakdown into a flaky or powdery substance. Replace the mat immediately if either of these happen.
The mat also has a sealed polyethylene backing, which prevents any liquid from going through to the ground, so you shouldn’t need to put a barrier underneath the mat. This will help prevent any oil or fuel from releasing to the environment and violating any permits you might have.
The PIG Oil-Only Railroad Absorbent Mat was designed to capture oil and fuels from railcars around railroad tracks. It comes in two sizes — one for inside of standard rails (59 inches) and one for outside of rails (19 inches).
This mat is extremely durable, which makes it perfect for outdoor use and even heavy foot traffic.
One roll of mat (59 inches by 100 feet) will absorb up to 60 gallons. It won’t absorb water, but any water that does come in contact with the mat will either roll off or evaporate.
You can also write this mat into your Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures plan or Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan as a best practice showing that you’re proactively putting measures in place to prevent releases to the environment.
