Follow these steps to refill gravity-fed (self-contained) eyewash stations:
1. Drain all the water from the tank
2. If possible, remove the spray heads and any tubing so they can be cleaned
3. Clean the exterior of the unit, and then use a soft brush, mild soap and warm water to clean the inside
4. Drain the wash water and rinse thoroughly
5. Reattach the spray heads and tubing if they were removed
6. Fill the unit with tepid, potable water
7. Add the water preservative
As a general rule, eyewash stations filled only with potable water should be drained and refilled monthly. Stations with water and preservative should be changed every three to six months.

If the problem is buildup of minerals, try mixing about half a cup of white vinegar into a gallon of distilled water and using a soft sponge or very soft nylon brush to remove the deposits. If the inside of the station is visibly dirty, some of my colleagues have successfully used a small amount of Johnson’s Baby Shampoo in distilled water to clean the insides (and outsides) of their stations.
No matter what method is used, be sure to rinse the eyewash station thoroughly and run water through it several times to make sure that there is no residue before refilling it for use.
Thanks,
Karen
